The Rating System

As we prepare to launch our first real episodes (you can find the first three light rum tasting pilot episodes online now!), we wanted to break down our spirit rating and review system going forward. We’re going to break through different show segments and some will not have full ratings, but for those that do, here is our plan:

Taste (Rating 1 to 5): The taste score will rate least (1) to best (5) on the product feels in the mouth. Thickness, maturity, body, flavor and alcohol burn all can be found in the taste rating.

Smell (Rating 1 to 5): How does the spirit tell its story in the bouquet? Does it have a wonderful scent? None at all? Do you fall in love with its smell or are you turned off?

Presentation (Rating 1 to 5): Does the spirit look good in the glass? If its a dark rum is it rich with darkness or yellow? Is the blanco tequila crystal clear or tainted with color?

Cost (Rating 1 to 5): There are many competitive spirits in the industry and they all choose their own price, but is it too expensive for the taste? The last rating we’ll look at is cost. In a blind tasting, we’ll rate this last when we know the price. This rating will be highly reflective of the past scores. A low scoring taste with a high price may push the rating down to 1 instead of a more favorable number, like 5. We don’t mind spending more for better quality, but that’s not always the case is it?
