ABV 03: Bourbon Whiskey -

Buffalo Trace, Knob Creek, Woodford Reserve and Maker’s Mark blind tasting.

ABV 03: Bourbon Whiskey

In this episode we will blind taste four bourbon whiskeys: Buffalo Trace, Knob Creek, Woodford Reserve and Maker’s Mark to find the best kentucky bourbon whiskey. Of course, there are many bourbons missing from our tasting and that is okay, because we can buy more and taste them along with whoever we find “the best” in this blind tasting.

Since I became a whisky snob by watching ralfy videos, here are some ideas:

    1. Try using glasses like those, for best smelling experience: http://www.eisch.de/de/website/news/malt_whisky/Malt-WhiskyGross.jpg wine, etc.

    2. You should taste and smell it raw, then with very little amount of water (few drops).

Big fan of bourbon. Thanks for the cast

Great episode! I knew #4 was the KC from the reaction. The Buffalo Trace is a great Bourbon for mixing or sipping the sweetness gives it away. Not the biggest fan of Makers and the same on Woodford. Now, Woodford does come out with a Masters selection but they'll run you over $65. Looking forward to the Whiskey Sour episode.

Do they make alcohol candy? I mean really! That's like asking if absinthe has its own support group. The answer to both: Of Course! http://www.lollyphile.com/

Also, in my opinion, you should give the scores for each criterion out of ten, not five, because it'll give you a little more scope for ratings and enable you to better differentiate the drinks.

I don't mind spending USD $65 if it's going to be good, that's not that big of a problem. :)

We started with a larger scoring system but some folks thought it was too broad because it's hard to tell, for instance what makes something an 8 vs. a 7? It seems the only thing that can make one and 8 and the other a 7 is that you like one better than the other in that category which then begs the question, wouldn't that be like saying something is a 3 and the other is a 4? I don't know. We're still trying to hammer that out.

Things could change in the future, for instance, we're not even sure presentation scoring is required. We're still finding our stride I guess.

Sure, it's still all comparative but that is what all of your testings are anyway. My concern with the current system is that if you have a larger spread of difference in a tasting you may have to give one alcohol a 5 when it is not a perfect beverage or give it a 2 or 1 which may reflect poorly on a beverage that is only comparatively worse. Perhaps 8 would be a good maximum score?
Anyway, that's my 2 cents worth.

Love your new show. But I have to agree with Vygantas, you need some good nosing glasses. I use the Glencairn for my Scotch. http://www.kegworks.com/product.php?productid=1...

I agree with you and Vygantas, we do need real glasses. This week, oddly enough, we're using a wine glass for orange liqueurs (you'll see that tomorrow if this thing ever renders out) however I'm also looking to get real glasses. So much to do, it takes time to build up to it all.

    What about these: http://awesomedrinks.com/glass_brandy_snifter.html

those will work too, might be a little on the big side though. Funny, I started off with wine glasses when I first got into Scotch too.

Buffalo Trace sucks try Rebel yell.

Really? The reviews I'm looking at with a few googles don't put it in a good light. Seems like it's “good mixable” but “not good straight.”

Not sure where to get this yet.
