ABV 15: Gold Rum Tasting

We’re tasting five unique styles of gold rum with a very competitive pricing. We’ve got Mount Gay, Gosling’s, Don Q, Bacardi and Myers’s Gold Rum and we’re trying to find the best taste for our palate. All the costs may be competitive, but you’d want to buy what you like best, right?

You might also want to add Captain Morgan :-)

There are really tons and tons of different brands to try out so, hard to pick stuff out.
About the coloring, *in general* i think they follow the same way tequila goes with the reposado / añejo. But with less, or no rules.
And usually gold rums are mixed anyway, blanco rums mixed with dark ones, blending together to get…the best of both i guess.

Unfortunally i've only had the bacardi gold from the rums listed on this show.

I thought most of the Captain Morgan stuff was “flavored with spices.” I didn't find any straight gold ones.

Yeah, with Tequila you can almost say anything 3+ years is Añejo, anything 9+ months tends to be 'rested' (Reposado) and the youngest being silver.

So many brands, so little time! Oh wait, we got time :)

If you want to get a really good idea of pricing, take a look at this page:
    http://www.dleg.state.mi.us/lcc_code/sr_lcc.asp

This is the Michigan state liquor book. They list base price (minimum price from the manufacturer for all states), taxes, and profit for every liquor Michigan sells. Also, in Michigan we have a state minimum price, which means the minimum price liquor stores can sell the liquor for. Most of them sell for that price, and it's pretty representative of the cost across the country for a taxed state.

When you move on to spiced rum, be sure to pick up Captain Morgan Private Stock. It is by far my favourite but I would like to see how it does in your blind taste text.

Actually I'd have to pick up the normal one, I only have Private Stock–that's the only Spiced rum I usually drink.

I'm looking forward to seeing what cocktail you choose to test these with. Rums tend to be my alcohol of choice, so it's nice to see another episode with them. Hope to see more in the future!!

    Hi, Derrick!

I haven't commented a lot lately, but I have been whatcing! I must say that I really enjoy the new show; mainly because I need to buy some new alcohol soon and I want to get the best flavours! As I get more into drinks and alcohols I notice that some alcohols probably could be better. Watching this show teaches me which brands that brings the extra awesome factor and that is just what I want to know!
