ABV 19: Dark Rum Tasting

We’re moving on to the Dark Rum category of spirits with six brands including Flor de Caña, Gosling’s Black Seal, Cruzan Aged, Don Q Añejo and Bacardi 8. While we cannot find a definitive “dark rum” guide to help us understand which is dark and which is only “gold,” these brands call themselves out as dark rums on their websites or through marketing material.

So, based on marketing, we think we can safely explore these as categorical dark rum styles. Taste on young warriors…

    You guys missed the Ron Zacapa Centenario 23, which is a multiple gold medal winner in the world rum festival. It is the best rum for sipping, but I also like to use it in mixed drinks, as the beautiful flavors cut through any mixers with ease.

    Sound selection. But my dark rum of choice is Lambs Navy. Solid rum that is great on its own or mixed about. Has a good kick to it too. But you probably knew that.

    Another Dark Rum is the “Kraken” from Indiana. Add a splash of soda water and sip away. Great Rum, tasting and website.

    Yes, we just tasted it for next week's ABV on Spiced Rums :) I had bought it a couple days ago, then saw this comment and was like “oh, yeah! That!”

    here the Cruzan is around $12, but just last week it went on clearance for $6.50! Great price. Also it the least aged of the rums you tasted at 2 years. I like to consider it a really nice Gold Rum.

    I actually bought 2 of the dark aged (all they had) and 5 of the light aged at the same price. You got to stock up when you get prices like that.
