ABV 25: Reposado Tequila Tasting

We’re tasting reposado tequila, five brands including: Tres Generaciones, Don Julio, El Gran Jubileo, Partida and the 100-Proof Dulce Vida. We tried to get a cross-section of pricing and style but each tequila ranged from USD $40 to USD $50 so we didn’t get as big of a price bracket as we wanted.

I wish I lived in the US sometimes. Tequila here in New Zealand is hideously overpriced and very hard to find 100% agave. I found Don Julio reposado, but it was $119 NZD, which converts to $85 USD. Patron and Tres Generaciones are about the same price.
Lately, I have found El Jimador Blanco and Reposado, which are 100% agave, and go for about $28 USD. They are fine for cocktails, but not great for sipping.

Great episode once again, I was surprised that Partida wasn't at the top, given all the hype behind that brand.

Wow, that's a huge difference. It probably does cost them a fortune to export it and bring it around the world, no doubt. It seems to go up in $10 increments the further away from Mexico as you go. Unfortunate!

Best Episode yet; Cherries, cakes, I can't believe its not butter and one excellent Michael Jackson impression. Let me be the first to put my name on the list to see a cake tasting, that would be, to quote a notable man, AWESOME.

Another great episode! I think your wife is gonna come around to tequila pretty soon. She's getting the hang of it! Maybe tasting the 100 proof first killed the taste buds and the spice from the rest?

I can't wait for the anejo episode. By the way… the Gran Jubileo is more like $35-$36.

    LOL. That's all, just LOL.

Good to know, we had the toughest time finding the Reposado's pricing for Grand Jubileo!

Have you ever tried Azul tequila? Its a Reposado but I was under the impression most Reposados are around $40. However Azul is available in Vermont for only $20. I guess I was wondering if there was a reason it was so cheap or if it may be worth buying.

If I recall, Azul doesn't state “100% de Agave” on the bottle. That would make it much cheaper, as it will probably be 51% agave (unrested) with caramel color to make it look older. I may be wrong, but I'll have to look harder at the brand.

  • Nathan Robarge

It does say 100% de Agave.

    Excellent, then rock that stuff!
